Embracing and Honoring the Crone: Exploring Body Image and Eating Disorders in Menopause
Menopause is a natural stage of life that can span a decade or more and impacts about 50% of the world’s population. Discussion of menopause has heretofore been taboo or neglected but in recent years has gotten more attention. The menopause cycle includes peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause and can last a decade or more. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and range from physical (ex: hot flashes, fatigue, adiposity weight gain, muscle loss) to mental (ex: brain fog, inability to concentrate, forgetfulness, depression). These changes can also be brought on by medical treatments for cancer and other conditions, causing a sudden, medically-induced menopause. Nutrition needs can also change during this time, upending even the strongest of eating disorder recoveries. All these changes can bring about body image, self-worth, and identity concerns which can, in turn, lead to disordered eating and even clinical eating disorders. This interactive workshop aims to explore these themes in this stage of life and learn innovative and effective interventions to help clients redefine their view of this transition. We will unpack current societal beliefs of the “crone” and look at creative ways to bring about a renewed sense of identity and reconnection to the body, and hopefully, a newfound respect for the body’s resilience.
