The Eating Disorder in Your Caseload: Improving Screening in the Era of Diet Culture and GLP-1s

This presentation examines how provider bias, weight stigma, and diet culture influence care in ways often overlooked in training. Many clinicians lack education on assessing and responding to eating disorders (EDs), leading to missed diagnoses and poorer outcomes. This training helps clinicians identify EDs in their caseloads, recognize related psychopathology, and determine when referral is needed. Participants will learn why ED screening is essential across settings, even when not the primary concern. Through psychoeducation and case examples, the impact of EDs on mental and physical health will be explored, along with how disordered eating can function as a coping strategy. The risks of ignoring EDs and common provider concerns, such as losing patients and limited awareness of internalized bias, will be addressed. Weight stigma will be framed as a cultural competence issue, with practical strategies for assessment, screening, and referral.

  1. By the end of the session, participants will accurately distinguish at least 3 key clinical features that differentiate disordered eating behaviors from diagnosable eating disorders using case examples.

  2. By the end of the session, participants will list at least 3 validated assessment tools (e.g., EDE-Q, BAS, MMPI-3) suitable for screening feeding and eating concerns in non-specialist care settings.

  3. By the end of the session, participants will identify 3 cultural or systemic factors (e.g., food insecurity, body ideals) that influence eating and body image, and explain how these factors can affect assessment and treatment planning.
