How Can I Help? Answers For Therapists Without Much Training in Eating Disorders
This workshop was inspired by an email the presenter received that summed up years of similar statements. It said, "I think a lot of clinicians see a client with an eating disorder and think, That's above my pay grade. Automatic pass. I'd love to know how a non-specialist (like me) can help!"
It's true that it takes thousands of hours to learn to treat eating disorders—but to be helpful? Any clinician can do that. So rather than an "Eating Disorders 101," this presentation addresses the real-world questions therapists often ask, such as "Why are these disorders so resistant to treatment?" "How do you manage the nontraditional or 'atypical' presentations?" And most importantly, "How can I help?"

Educational Learning Objectives:
-
Name at least two historic myths about eating disorders.
-
Identify two reasons, shown by research, why these disorders can be so persistent and thus challenging to treat.
-
List at least three ways providers who do not specialize in eating disorders can be helpful to clients with eating disorders.
