LGBTQIA2s+ Affirmative Trauma Informed Care

This presentation will explore the intersection of affirmative and trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ clients. It will focus on how mental health professionals can integrate approaches to provide holistic and comprehensive care for gender and sexual minorities who have experienced trauma. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the unique forms of trauma LGBTQ+ individuals may face and provide practical tools and strategies for creating safe, affirming spaces that support healing, build resilience, and promote recovery for LGBTQ+ clients.

LGBTQIA2S+ individuals experience higher rates of trauma due to systemic discrimination, social stigma, and exclusion from affirming healthcare. To foster healing and resilience, providers must integrate trauma-informed care with LGBTQIA2S+ affirmative practices. This presentation will explore the intersection of trauma, identity, and mental health, equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills to create safer, more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA2S+ clients.

Participants will learn the core principles of trauma-informed care—including safety, trust, empowerment, and cultural humility—while examining their application through an LGBTQIA2S+ affirming lens. We will discuss the impact of minority stress, microaggressions, and institutional barriers on mental health, highlighting strategies to mitigate harm and enhance protective factors. Special attention will be given to inclusive language, pronoun respect, and the importance of representation in therapeutic settings.

Through case studies and interactive discussions, attendees will gain practical tools to recognize and address the unique needs of LGBTQIA2S+ clients, fostering a supportive environment that validates their lived experiences. This presentation aims to empower mental health professionals to move beyond cultural competency toward true allyship, ensuring that LGBTQIA2S+ individuals receive the affirming, trauma-sensitive care they deserve.

Educational Learning Objectives:

1.       Participants will acquire an introductory definition of the LGBTQIA2s+ community and the impact of trauma on the LGBTQIA2s+ community.
2.        Participants will develop an understanding on the intersection between affirming and trauma informed strategies to best service traumatized LGBTQIA2s+ Individuals.
3.        Participants will integrate key strategies of trauma-informed and affirmative practice through a holistic comprehensive framework.
